在1992年出版的科幻小说《雪崩》之中，尼尔·斯蒂芬森缔造了Metaverse这个专有术语，Meta意为“元”、“超越”，verse则指“宇宙”，因此它也被译为“元宇宙”。元宇宙原意指的是现实宇宙之外和之后的一个新宇宙空间，更通俗的理解就是可以让人类亲身体验的虚拟现实世界，就像很多人都看过的电影《头号玩家》中的绿洲。元宇宙包罗万象、无限逼近真实，在各方面都与真实世界形成替代乃至竞争关系。
In the science fiction novel Avalanche, published in 1992, Neil Stephenson created the term Metaverse, which means “meta”, “beyond”, and verse, which means “cosmos”, which is therefore also translated into “megaspace.” The metacosystem is meant to refer to a new universe outside and after the real universe, and it is understood more generally that the virtual real world can be experienced by human beings, like the oasis of the film First Player, which many have seen. The universe is all-encompassing, infinitely close to the real world, and in all its aspects forms forms an alternative and even competitive relationship with the real world.

If the metacosystem represents the future of the digitalization of the human world, the chain of blocks is an essential part of it. NFT is able to map virtual objects and become a trading entity for virtual items, thereby making virtual items asset-based and creating a digital copyright and title certificate. NFT's authentication and holding function can be applied to anything that we can imagine, including physical assets (e.g. land, property, automobiles, works of art, etc.). In the meta-cosm, NFT, like digital certificates, is able to identify NFTs to confirm users' rights without the need for intermediary agencies. NFT can also be a decentralised transfer of rights in the meta-cosm.
