Tether (USDT) is an encrypted currency based on a block chain, supported by an equivalent dollar reserve in circulation, which is stored in a designated bank account, also known as Stablecoin. It is designed to address the volatility of encrypted currencies, rather than price fluctuations like other mainstream encrypted currencies, such as Bitcoin (BTC) and Ethers (ETH). This would allow them to be used as a medium for transactions and as a storage of values, rather than as speculative investments.

In April 2019, according to press release , the Minister of Justice of New York, Letitia James, announced that he had obtained a court order to secure an iFinex Inc., an encrypted currency trading platform, and a USDT issuer, Teth Limited, and its associated entities, for their wrongdoing in deceiving New York investors, would terminate their business in New York.

In one statement, however, iFinex Inc. and Tether Limited referred to the New York Attorney-General's document as maliciously written and full of false assertions, including the $850 million in “losses” described therein. On the contrary, they had been told that the asset had not been lost and was in fact seized and protected. Bitfinex and Tether had stated in their statement that the company was completely free of financial problems and had accepted the challenge of law enforcement to prove its innocence.
